Polling stations in the Brussels municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode opened without issues on Sunday morning, according to the regional administration responsible for Brussels’ local governments.

The polling stations will close at 16:00. After the previous election was cancelled due to proxy vote irregularities, residents of Saint-Josse are expected at the polling booths from 8:00 in the morning.

A court determined in late November that significant irregularities had occurred, which could have affected the distribution of seats. The Brussels Local Authorities Administration is in close contact with the twelve polling stations to ensure everything runs smoothly.

A WhatsApp group including all polling station presidents has been established to enable quick responses to any incidents. The election helpdesk, set up by the regional administration to support the start and smooth running of the voting process, has been operational since 06:30.

In case of problems or long queues, the municipality can redirect voters to other polling stations. The election will determine whether current Mayor Emir Kir (PS) will maintain his absolute majority. Kir faces competition mainly from his former party, the PS, from which he was expelled in 2022.

The results of the local election are expected tonight.
