A fire destroyed two chalets near the Auberge de Jacques, a former football refreshment bar now a centre for migrants and the homeless, in Waremme (Liège) on Saturday evening, according to emergency services on Sunday.
Firefighters from the Hesbaye area were alerted around 18:30. They quickly intervened and managed to control the flames.
Two storage structures for clothing and items for those in need were completely destroyed. About ten firefighters were involved, and the operation concluded around 20:30.
Waremme Mayor Raphaël Dubois, along with police and emergency planning services, visited the scene.
Authorities initially considered temporary rehousing in a sports centre. However, residents were allowed to return to their dormitory for the night after an inspection and an electrician’s visit.
Mayor Dubois praised the swift response of the emergency services.
Only two of the four chalets on site were affected by the fire. The main shelter remained unharmed.
The cause of the fire is unknown, and an investigation is ongoing.
