New shots were fired late on Monday evening in the vicinity of the Saint-Guidon metro station in Anderlecht, local media BX1 and Belga reported on Tuesday. One person was injured as a result.
"On Monday 17 February at 22:25, the Brussels Midi police were called to the scene of a person injured by a bullet on Saint-Guidon Square in Anderlecht,’ the public prosecutor's office confirmed. The information had previously been confirmed to RTBF by Anderlecht Mayor Fabrice Cumps (PS).
At the scene, police found a victim with an injured leg at the scene. The person was conscious and his life was not in danger.
"According to the initial findings, only one bullet was fired," the public prosecutor's office continued. "The victim was apparently shot by a suspect travelling on an electric scooter. The victim was able to get to safety while the suspect fled."
The victim received the necessary care and was able to be questioned. Several witnesses have also been identified, they added.
The federal police's forensic lab and a ballistics expert have been dispatched to the scene, but the motives for the shooting are still unclear, the investigation is ongoing, the public prosecutor's office added.
It is not yet known whether these incidents are linked to drug trafficking and the recent shootings in Brussels. This series of drug-related shootings have already left two people dead and three injured since the beginning of February.
It is the second day where a shooting has taken place in this part of Anderlecht. On Sunday evening, another incident occurred at around 02:00 at Place de la Vaillance next to Saint-Guidon metro station, with no injuries.
Locals are increasingly voicing their concerns over the deterioration of security in the Brussels municipality.
