The Flemish Red Cross has kicked off its annual blood donation campaign at the Karel de Grote University College campus in Antwerp’s Groenplaats, aiming to collect a record 12,000 blood and plasma donations from students and staff of tertiary institutions.
The campaign, dubbed ‘Bloedserieus’ (‘Blood Seriousness’) is in its 36th year. It specifically targets students as new donors, hoping they will continue donating throughout their lives.
“Here, students themselves motivate other students to donate blood,” Red Cross spokesperson Vincent Verbeecke explained. “It is crucial for us to find repeat donors for stability in our donor bank. Getting students enthusiastic early, and showing them how easy and life-saving it is, significantly helps our blood supply.”
First-time donors are guided by more experienced students.
“You first fill out a questionnaire and have a short consultation with a doctor. If everything goes well, you can donate,” said nursing student Kathy De Keyser. “The donation itself takes about seven minutes. Afterwards, you can rest and chat with us to make sure you’re feeling well, and you’ll receive a snack and drink.”
Throughout the coming months, Bloedserieus donation days will be available in nearly every university city. Blood donations take place on campus, while plasma donations are only done at donor centres.
