Pope Francis remains in critical condition but "rested well" during the night, the Vatican said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

The 88-year-old Pope was taken to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic hospital in Rome on 14 February to be treated for bronchitis. It has since emerged that he has pneumonia affecting both lungs.

"The Pope rested well throughout the night," the Holy See said in a brief statement on the 12th day of his hospitalisation, which is the longest hospital stay since he became Pope in 2013.

Over the past two years, he has suffered from influenza and other health problems several times.

The Pope visited Belgium for the first time in 30 years in September 2024. There were concerns the trip would be cancelled when he was infected with the flu just days before departure, but the tour went ahead.
