Two fourth-division provincial football players were injured on Saturday evening in Essen, Antwerp province, by fireworks set off by supporters at the start of a derby between KSV Wildert and FC Excelsior Essen.
The local police confirmed this information on Sunday, initially reported by Gazet van Antwerpen.
One of the players sustained burns to his chest, while the other complained of tinnitus. Both players received medical treatment immediately.
The match was ultimately cancelled and will be rescheduled.
