Belgian customs officials caught 468 travellers carrying excessive amounts of cash at airports last year.

Travellers to and from the European Union must declare cash worth at least €10,000, regardless of the currency. The 468 travellers caught had a combined total of €6.8 million in cash.

One person was found with €196,000, another had €110,000, and two others each had €100,000. Zaventem Airport had the highest number of cases, with 435 people caught carrying too much cash.

There were 27 cases at Charleroi, one at Deurne, and five at Ostend. Customs officials checked 18,500 people last year, with 2.5% found in violation.

Most of the cash, €6 million, was in euros, plus $600,000 and a further €200,000 in other currencies. In 2023, 619 travellers, including 585 at Zaventem, were caught with large sums of cash, totalling €8.8 million.
