A Dutch participant died on Saturday during the Tour of Flanders for amateur cyclists, organisers of “We Ride Flanders” confirmed.
“A participant felt unwell on the Traaiberg in Maarkedal,” said spokesperson Gert Van Goolen. “Despite quick assistance and resuscitation efforts, the person died of heart failure.”
Another incident occurred on the Vieux Kwaremont in Kluisbergen, where a person had to be evacuated by helicopter. The condition of this individual is still unknown.
Held the day before the Tour of Flanders, the amateur version of the Ronde attracted around 15,000 cycling tourists on Saturday for a race from Bruges to Oudenaarde covering 229 km. Approximately 10,000 foreign cyclists participated.
