French President Emmanuel Macron has stated Hamas should have no role in governing Gaza and must cease to be a threat to Israel, during a press conference in Cairo on Monday.

Alongside his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, Macron reiterated his full support for the Arab League’s plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip.

He also firmly opposed the displacement of populations and any annexation of Gaza or the West Bank, describing such actions as violations of international law and severe threats to regional security, including that of Israel.

Macron also addressed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, calling for Russia to stop its deceptive manoeuvres and accept, without any conditions, the ceasefire proposed by Donald Trump.

He criticised Moscow for not only refusing the ceasefire for nearly a month but also escalating bombings on civilians.

On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the absence of an American response to Putin’s refusal to agree to a complete and unconditional ceasefire, following renewed fatal Russian attacks on Ukraine.
