A man in his thirties drove the wrong way on the E42 motorway last Wednesday to evade a police check near Spy, according to the Namur prosecutor’s office.
The incident occurred on 16 April around 19:30 when customs officers were conducting checks on the motorway towards Mons. The suspect was spotted near the Spy service area.
To avoid the police, he turned around and drove against the traffic on the E42, then exited via the slip road towards Chaussée de Nivelles, still going the wrong way.
Police found the vehicle abandoned on a rural road in Gembloux, with 946 bottles of alcohol inside. The man was apprehended nearby, fleeing on foot with a young child, around 20:00.
In addition to the alcohol, police seized the vehicle, a phone, and various documents. The case is under investigation for obstructing traffic and resisting arrest. The suspect is now under electronic surveillance while in preventive detention.
