A joint investigation by RTBF, Franceinfo, and France 24 has revealed how Elon Musk uses his social media platform X - formerly Twitter - to amplify far-right messages in Europe, often by disseminating false information.
The study analysed more than 15,000 tweets Musk sent out between November 2024 and April 2025.
A minority of these contained false information, yet they were systematically posted at critical points in the European political calendar, especially around election periods, according to the French-speaking public media.
Spreading extreme narratives and fuelling misinformation
Since purchasing Twitter in 2022, Elon Musk has fundamentally transformed the platform. By supporting far-right accounts and frequently interacting with radical political figures, he has significantly contributed to the polarisation of public debate in Europe.
His messages and the accounts he favours serve as ideological channels, spreading extreme narratives and fuelling misinformation.
Among the European countries, Germany appears to be a primary target. Musk supports the right wing AfD and frequently interacts with Naomi Seibt, a climate sceptic and anti-immigration activist, whose posts gain massive visibility through his platform.
Amplifying far-right narratives
In the UK, he has attacked Prime Minister Keir Starmer, spreading unsubstantiated claims about “grooming gangs,” and supports Tommy Robinson, a prominent figure in the British far-right.
In Belgium, Musk supports Dries Van Langenhove, a former Vlaams Belang member of Parliament. In France, he has opposed the conviction of former National Rally leader Marine Le Pen for misappropriating European public funds.
Through the selective amplification of far-right narratives, Elon Musk is becoming a significant influencer in European politics, the investigation concludes.
