On Sunday, individuals turned the fountain at Sint-Baafsplein in Ghent red to protest the violence in Gaza.

Several women entered the fountain, where the red water symbolised the bloodshed in the Palestinian territory.

This demonstration is part of a broader call for solidarity with the Palestinian people, who have become victims in the Gaza war following Hamas’s terrorist attack against Israel on 7 October 2023. Israel’s military response has devastated the Gaza Strip and caused a humanitarian disaster.

Participants were protesting against the violence in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 52,000 people, mainly civilians, according to figures from the Hamas Ministry of Health that the UN deems reliable.

They also criticised the lack of international response.

The protesters demanded that Belgium recognise the State of Palestine, impose sanctions on Israel, and sever diplomatic relations with the country as long as the conflict continues.

The demonstration was peaceful, with police presence.
