The Flemish Wind Energy Association (VWEA) fears the sector might shut down if the Government of Flanders proceeds with plans to enforce distance regulations for large wind turbines.

Flemish Environment Minister Jo Brouns (Christen Democratisch en Vlaams, CD&V) is thinking of implementing such regulations, according to a report published on Monday by Het Laatste Nieuws.

Specifically, for wind turbines over 200 metres tall, the distance from the nearest residence would need to be at least three times their height at the blade tip.

The VWEA, which represents developers, wind farm operators, manufacturers, consultancy firms, and suppliers, believes this requirement jeopardises the government’s own onshore wind power targets. It introduces significant uncertainty and legal insecurity, the association claims.

“Many in the sector are discussing the possibility of a shutdown if this initiative goes ahead,” said VWEA Director Maarten Dedeyne.
