Since Tuesday, code orange for fire danger is in effect in West Flanders, as in the other four Flemish provinces, prompting vigilance calls from the Agency for Nature and Forests (ANB).
Last week’s favourable weather in West Flanders has changed.
"There was high relative humidity and a favourable westerly wind," explains ANB spokesperson Jeroen Denaeghel. It has now become drier and sunnier, increasing the risk of wildfires.
ANB urges caution, particularly in open natural areas like dunes, where the risk is heightened. "Preferably stay at the edges of nature reserves and avoid walking through the middle," advises Denaeghel.
Lighting fires is strictly prohibited, and smoking is discouraged.
Code orange is expected to remain in place for a week, with ANB set to provide an update next Tuesday.
