Lidl, the German supermarket chain, has completed the structural work on a new distribution centre in Herentals, valued at €122 million, which will become its largest logistics site in Belgium and the sixth in the country.
Spanning the equivalent of five football fields, the distribution centre aims to relieve pressure on Lidl’s other hubs and sustain the company’s steady growth in Belgium. Along with Ahold Delhaize, Lidl is one of the few retail chains reporting favourable performance, whereas Colruyt and Carrefour are facing declines and Aldi remains stagnant.
Lidl plans to operationalise the distribution centre, located alongside the E313, in early 2027. It will primarily serve stores in the greater Antwerp area, supporting Lidl’s ambition to open around eighty new outlets in Belgium by 2038.
“Belgium remains a significant growth market for Lidl,” said CEO Marjolein Frederickx on Friday. “This distribution centre is essential for ensuring our current and future stores are supplied with fresh products daily.”
