The local police in the Balen-Dessel-Mol area have launched an investigation into possible arson following a car fire in Dessel during the night between Friday and Saturday.
The blaze also briefly spread to the front of a house, but fortunately, no significant damage occurred.
According to the police, the cause of the fire remains uncertain, particularly as limited technical analysis could be conducted on the damaged vehicle.
The vehicle in question was a hybrid, requiring the fire brigade to approach the fire with caution.
Residents reported hearing a loud bang when the fire started.
Commissioner Robert Lehaen stated, “We do not assume the car spontaneously caught fire.” He added that the investigation is also considering if there could be a motive behind any deliberate act or if it was a random incident.
A young family with a child was in the house, but they narrowly avoided more serious consequences.
