A 19-year-old man from the Netherlands was arrested in the Port of Antwerp on Friday night on suspicion of attempted murder.
According to the Antwerp Public Prosecutor's Office, the man is suspected of deliberately driving his vehicle into a police officer. He was at the scene with two accomplices, aged 16.
The maritime police spotted a vehicle registered in the Netherlands and attempted to stop it. The driver refused to comply and deliberately drove into a police officer. "The officer managed to grab hold of the vehicle's window frame, which prevented him from being seriously injured, but he was dragged along for several metres," the Public Prosecutor's Office said on Monday.
The three occupants of the vehicle were arrested shortly afterwards. According to initial findings, they were looking for a shipment of cocaine to extract, the Public Prosecutor's Office said.
The driver was placed under arrest by the investigating judge for attempted murder and drug trafficking in association with others. The two minors were brought before a youth court judge, who ordered them to be placed in a secure institution.
