Despite a dry Spring, there is currently no risk to the water supply in Wallonia, Walloon Environment Minister Yves Coppieters said on Wednesday.
“The information we have is completely reassuring,” the minister noted during a plenary session of the Walloon Parliament.
In contrast, several regions in Flanders have already implemented water extraction bans and called for careful use of drinking water.
The difference, Coppieters explained, is that Wallonia relies on groundwater and reservoirs, while Flanders uses more surface water. However, he emphasised that a task force is closely monitoring the situation.
The next meeting is scheduled for 27 May. Since no heavy rainfall is expected by then, there may be a call for cautious water usage.
“If the drought continues, some localised problems could arise in Wallonia," Coppieters said. "However, there will never be sweeping measures imposed prematurely; they will be limited and local.”
