Switzerland avalanche: Five people injured, including a Belgian

Five people injured in a deadly avalanche on Switzerland’s Eiger mountain are not in a life-threatening condition, according to a statement by Bern canton police on Sunday, identifying one of the injured as a Belgian woman who resides in Switzerland.

The avalanche struck the nearly 4,000-metre high Eiger on Saturday afternoon around 13:45, sweeping away several individuals and resulting in the deaths of two hikers.

The injured were transported to the hospital by helicopter on Saturday with minor to moderate injuries and are now declared to be out of danger.

The police reported that the five injured individuals include one Belgian and four Swiss citizens, all residing in Switzerland. The nationalities of the two deceased victims have not been disclosed.
