A Brussels police officer who was involved in a fatal collision with a scooter rider in Rue Blaes in the city centre on 11 May was driving without a valid driver's license at the time of the accident, confirmed the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office. He was arrested.

On the night of 11 to 12 May, a scooter rider died after a collision with a police vehicle in Rue Blaes.

An investigation was immediately launched to determine the circumstances of the accident, and a forensic doctor, a car expert and the federal police lab were called in. Initial findings showed that neither vehicle was driving at high speed and that the police vehicle was not chasing the scooter rider, but that the latter allegedly did not give way.

However, a second investigation was launched following the fatal accident, La Capitale reported and the Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed on Friday. "The second investigation concerns the offence of driving without a licence by the police officer involved."

The police officer was convicted in 2023 by the Liège police court for a speeding offence. His driving licence was revoked, with the obligation to retake the exams. However, the officer never retook the exam and therefore never got his driving licence back, the Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed.

"This fact, which had not previously been brought to the attention of the Public Prosecutor, was discovered after detailed checks by the magistrate in charge of the case," the Public Prosecutor said.

The police officer involved has been arrested. He will soon have to answer to the police court in an accelerated procedure.
