A majority of Belgians believe the European Union should not yield to US import tariffs, according to a poll by Testachats, published in La Libre Belgique on Friday.
Two-thirds of Belgians find it unthinkable for Belgium to negotiate directly with the United States without involving the European Union. Additionally, three out of four Belgians think the EU should impose retaliatory tariffs on US products and services.
More than 80% of respondents feel the EU should strengthen its presence in emerging markets to trade goods and raw materials, invest more in technology and digital sectors, and create local alternatives to US products and services.
Nine out of ten Belgians expect the trade war with the US to negatively affect the economic situation of national businesses, as well as the Belgian and broader European economies, mainly due to reduced purchasing power.
