Suspects in terrorism-related cases in Belgium are increasingly younger, according to the Federal Prosecution’s annual report for 2024 released on Monday.

Last year, over 70 individuals were summoned in federal cases in Belgium on charges of committing terrorist crimes. The Federal Prosecution advises maintaining vigilance against terrorism, as new cases are opened every month.

The focus has shifted away from "departures" to jihadist regions to activities conducted within Belgium.

Attention is now centred on lone actors rather than multinational or international movements. These actors are individuals operating without external support and using limited resources to plan terrorist acts.

Within the report, the Federal Prosecution further underscored how widespread online propaganda has facilitated the process of radicalisation.

A significant increase in young suspects was also noted. In 2022, 16 cases involving minors were recorded, rising to 24 in 2023 and reaching 55 in 2024.

The Federal Prosecution is generally not responsible for terrorism offences committed by minors unless transferred by a juvenile judge. However, it supports local prosecutors with cases involving both adults and minors.
