The Socialist Party's (PS) Molenbeek-Saint-Jean sub-department is being placed under the tutelage of Brussels PS for four months. The party announced the decision in a press release on Monday.

The Molenbeek PS has been subject to internal turmoil for years. Mayor Catherine Moureaux (PS) has been absent since February due to illness and will remain away until at least the end of June. Until then, councillor Amet Gjanaj (PS) will take over as mayor.

In concrete terms, the Molenbeek branch will be supervised by a delegation from the Brussels PS federation for the next four months.

The measure is necessary to restore a "serene climate" and to prepare for the internal elections set to be held later this year, according to a press release.

The decision was taken after an "in-depth analysis" of the local situation and "numerous discussions" with members of the Molenbeek PS branch.
