The final batch of Dutch F-16 fighter jets destined for Ukraine have left the Netherlands and made a stopover in Belgium where they will be prepared for delivery, the Dutch Ministry of Defence announced in The Hague on Monday.

In total, the Netherlands will have transferred 24 of these combat aircraft to Ukraine.

Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans called the departure of this final contingent an important milestone.

“Due to daily Russian strikes, the F-16s are crucial for Ukraine,” Brekelmans said, emphasising that defending against Russian aggression is also in the interests of Ukraine’s Western allies.

The minister highlighted major successes achieved by the Ukrainian defence forces using the jets, which have been instrumental in downing Russian cruise missiles and drones.

The Netherlands delivered the first batch of F-16s last year. According to the ministry, Ukraine will continue to receive Dutch support in the form of training, spare parts, ammunition, and fuel.

Pilots are being trained at a European training centre in Romania, as part of a coalition that includes Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United States.

Belgium also plans to supply Ukraine with thirty F-16s by 2028.
