A kilogram of cannabis was discovered in a vehicle during a routine check in Brussels on 17 May, concealed among children’s toys when the driver was apprehended
The Brussels-West police zone announced on Tuesday that they had seized nearly €50,000 in total during two separate operations.
The first operation took place around midday on Monday when a police patrol witnessed a drug exchange between two individuals in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, near the Comte de Flandre metro station.
During the check, one of the individuals, who was the buyer, immediately admitted to purchasing heroin for €50.
The second individual was taken to the police station for a search and questioning, and was found to be in possession of €53 and a mobile phone.
During a search of the seller’s apartment, another suspect, identified as the brother of the original suspect, was found. The police also seized 229.46 grams of heroin, a precision scale, five mobile phones, and €20,116.
The two brothers, found to be residing irregularly in Belgium, were handed over to the Brussels Public Prosecutor the next day and subsequently placed under arrest by an investigating judge.
The second police operation occurred the same day at approximately 15:10, when a patrol observed a vehicle on Boulevard Mettewie exhibiting suspicious behaviour. The occupants frequently glanced back and seemed nervous as they handled their mobile phones.
At the rear of the car, there were four young children who were not properly secured. Detecting a strong smell of cannabis, the officers decided to search the vehicle and discovered 1.044 kg of cannabis hidden among the children’s toy bags.
The two suspects, already known to the police, were taken to the station for a search and questioning, while the children were picked up by a family member.
During searches of the suspects’ residences, authorities also seized €27,033 and a firearm with ammunition. One of the individuals was released after questioning, while the other was placed under arrest.
These operations are part of the Brussels-West police zone’s anti-drug plan.
