About 50% of sexual assaults reported to SOS Viol [SOS Rape] in 2024 involved minor victims, the organisation announced on Wednesday.

The vast majority of sexual violence (89%) was perpetrated by someone known to the victim. In 33% of reported cases, the perpetrator was a family member. It was a spouse or ex-spouse in 22% of incidents, and an acquaintance in 34%.

Only 11% of sexual violence cases reported to SOS Viol involved a stranger.

In 2024, the organisation conducted 4,084 telephone consultations and 425 chat conversations. The number of calls was much higher than the 2,810 registered in 2022, while chat exchanges remained stable, having numbered 443 in 2022.

The number of psychological and social support sessions also increased –  from 3,137 in 2022 to 3,905 in 2024.

SOS Viol notes a specific pattern regarding the time between the assault and the initial contact with the service.

Only 27% of callers reported sexual violence within one day after it occurred, while 25% did so after a month, 26% after a year, and 22% after 10 years.

SOS Viol, which fights against sexual violence and promotes specialised, tailored support for victims, is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year.
