A car crashed into trees along the expressway in Péronnes, near Tournai, on Thursday.

Emergency services in Picardy Wallonia were alerted at 6:18 about a serious accident along the Sucrerie Road (RN52) near Péronnes, within the Antoing area. The incident occurred on the expressway heading from Gaurain (Tournai) to Hollain (Brunehaut).

An ambulance, a mobile emergency unit, a rescue vehicle, a marking truck, and a command vehicle were dispatched from Tournai. Captain Grégory Petit, who led the operation, explained, “The car’s driver, the sole person involved, was caught off guard by a lane reduction from two lanes to one in each direction. After swerving, the vehicle ended up in the trees lining the expressway.”

The driver, a Belgian national in his thirties, was alone in the car and needed to be freed from the wreck. “His legs were trapped in the crumpled metal. He was injured and transported to the ChWapi emergency centre in Tournai. Initial assessments suggest his life is not at risk,” the officer added.
