Polling stations opened in Poland on Sunday for a tightly contested presidential election run-off, which will have significant implications for the country’s role in Europe and its policies on abortion and LGBTQ+ rights.
Rafal Trzaskowski, a 53-year-old pro-European Union mayor of Warsaw and ally of the ruling centrist government, faces Karol Nawrocki, a 42-year-old nationalist historian backed by the opposition Law and Justice party (PiS) of the outgoing conservative president, Andrzej Duda.
Opinion polls indicate an extremely close race. Voting concludes at 21:00.
