Donald Trump has barred citizens from 12 countries from entering the United States to "protect" the nation from "foreign terrorists."

The White House released a statement on Wednesday, saying the ban comes into effect on 9 June.

It targets nationals from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

Seven additional countries face certain restrictions.

The Republican president suggested that this entry ban is a response to the attack in Colorado.

In Boulder, a man used incendiary devices against participants in a weekly march supporting Israeli hostages held by the Hamas in Gaza since 7 October 2023.

According to the White House, the suspected perpetrator of the attack was in the United States "illegally".
