Residents of certain Walloon municipalities have been advised to refrain from consuming eggs from their own chickens as a precautionary measure against PFAS contamination.
This recommendation comes from the Walloon Minister of Environment, Yves Coppieters, as conveyed in the French-speaking radio programme La Première.
He bases this advice on a recent report by Wallonia’s independent scientific council (CSI) urging such precautions.
The primary action requested is to avoid eating home-produced eggs in areas identified as contaminated.
The Coppieters cabinet clarified that these areas are prioritised investigation zones (ZIP) designated in recent months. In these municipalities, blood samples from residents are being monitored, and information sessions are held.
Specifically, this affects areas where water is partially or entirely supplied by the ‘Hainaut Feeder’, a supply line of the Brussels water company Vivaqua.
These municipalities include Braine-l’Alleud, Braine-le-Château, Gravenbrakel, Écaussinnes, Ittre, Seneffe, Soignies, Tubize, Waterloo, as well as Florennes, Chièvres, Ronquières, and Nandrin.
The scientific institute Issep will now begin sampling eggs. "We must be cautious until we have the results," the minister stated. Similar precaution is advised for vegetables from local gardens.
