Firefighter Adjutant Marc Sarlet, severely injured during the late May fire at Lantin prison, has shown significant improvement, his family announced on social media Friday evening.
“Good news of the day: Dad is conscious!” his children posted on the Facebook page set up to update the public about Marc Sarlet’s condition. Family members reported he favourably responded to recent medical stimuli tests.
His daughters expressed their joy, noting the return of his unique expressions, captivating gaze, familiar gestures, and his distinctive personality. He has begun communicating through gestures, signalling yes and no with his head, shrugging his shoulders, and even rolling his eyes, jokingly indicating their annoyance. In essence, he’s present and making that known in his own way.
The message also informed that the firefighter remains intubated due to swelling in his respiratory pathways that still need to subside.
“To ensure complete physical and psychological recovery, visits are currently restricted to immediate family,” his children added. “Once the time is right, others will be allowed, but within guidelines set by close family.”
The blaze ignited on Thursday 29 May, in the main laundry of Lantin prison, situated between the detention and penal buildings. Firefighter Maxime Coessens lost his life during the operation, while Marc Sarlet sustained serious injuries.
