On Saturday morning, a cyclist was killed in an accident on the ring road around Ghent (R4) near Zelzate, the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirms.
The accident occurred around 4:30 at the intersection of Kanaalstraat (R4) and Emiel Caluslaan. The cyclist, a 59-year-old man from Assenede, was struck by a vehicle and succumbed to his injuries.
Initially, reports suggested the driver had fled, but the 39-year-old man from Zelzate was later located. Tests revealed he was intoxicated.
Due to unclear circumstances surrounding the incident, the public prosecutor dispatched a traffic expert to investigate. A judicial inquiry has been initiated, and an autopsy on the cyclist’s body will be conducted.
