Vooruit is advocating for the reintroduction of a windfall tax to address the budget deficit, according to party leader Conner Rousseau in an interview with “De Zondag”.

During the 2022 energy crisis, the previous federal government implemented a windfall tax on excess profits for companies in the energy sector.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine had caused energy prices to skyrocket, resulting in substantial profits for energy producers.

The government then set a cap of €130 per megawatt-hour, and any profits exceeding this cap were taxed at 100%. This tax was abolished in 2023.

Speaking to De Zondag, Rousseau reiterated the proposal. “The previous government introduced a temporary tax on extraordinary profits during crises. Let us do it again. We will propose this measure to support the budget,” he stated.
