Part of the Pairi Daiza zoo in the Walloon province of Hainaut was closed for a while this weekend. A fight broke out between two sea lions in the British Columbia/Alaska area (‘The Last Frontier’).

The Last Frontier, the area designed to resemble British Columbia and Alaska, was closed on Sunday after several sea lions got into a fight.

"A male Steller sea lion wanted to mate with a female during the mating season, but she refused," said Hubert Vanslembrouck of Pairi Daiza. After being rejected, he behaved aggressively.

In order to restore calm as quickly as possible, part of the park had to be closed. Staff had to wait for the male to return to the other pool. This has now happened, meaning peace has been restored. The area is open to the public again.

Steller sea lions are a protected species that tend to live in large groups on rocky beaches. They communicate using distinctive growls and cries.
