A 50-year-old man from Torhout has been referred to the Bruges police court in connection with an accident that claimed the lives of three victims.
Jurgen L. was driving at high speed on the E403 in Ruddervoorde on the night of 10 to 11 August 2024 when he crashed into the rear of a family’s car from Handzame, killing a 29-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman, and their eight-year-old daughter. Investigations revealed he was not only speeding but also had a blood alcohol level well over the legal limit. Following interrogation, the Bruges investigating judge detained him on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, and several traffic offences.
It was later discovered that he has a total of 14 prior traffic convictions, including a three-month driving ban in October 2021. He was required to take both driving exams and undergo medical and psychological tests to regain his licence. However, this ban was never enforced, allowing him to continue driving.
The suspect was transferred to prison after spending over a week in the hospital. On 18 October, lawyer Walter Van Steenbrugge successfully petitioned the Bruges court to place his client under electronic monitoring, allowing him to serve his pre-trial detention at home with an ankle bracelet. He was eventually released under conditions in early January.
On Wednesday morning, the defence requested a further character investigation, which the court declined. Jurgen L. has been referred to the Bruges police court for charges including involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, and multiple other traffic violations. His conditions have been extended.
