An explosion startled a neighbourhood around the intersection of De Pretstraat and Cassierstraat in Antwerp in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The blast occurred near a café at around 03:40. It shattered the café’s windows, but no injuries were reported.
The police are treating the incident as an attack, a spokesperson for the Antwerp police confirmed to Belga News Agency on Thursday morning.
Authorities have begun searching for suspects, but no leads have been found so far. Investigators are seeking information from potential witnesses and are checking for any available footage of the incident.
A forensic team and the bomb disposal unit DOVO were deployed to the scene.
The Flemish metropolis is regularly the scene of night-time attacks involving explosives, against a backdrop of rising crime linked to drug trafficking.
