A person was killed and five others, including a child, were injured in a shooting on Saturday at a migrant camp near Dunkirk, northern France, according to the prosecutor’s office.
At around 10:00, shots were fired near the Loon-Plage camp, stated Charlotte Huet, the public prosecutor of Dunkirk, though she did not disclose the nationalities of those involved. The provisional toll stands at one dead and five injured, with two in critical condition, while the other three, including a woman and a child, suffered minor injuries, Huet added.
Two individuals, an adult man and a 17-year-old boy, have been taken into police custody, which could last up to four days, the prosecutor noted. The prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation for organised murder, attempted organised murder, and possession of category A and B weapons, which include firearms.
The Nord prefecture confirmed that security forces and emergency services have intervened at this migrant living site.
There have been many attempts to cross the English Channel in recent days, encouraged by favourable weather, particularly overnight from Thursday to Friday.
British authorities reported that 919 migrants crossed the Channel on Friday, using 14 boats.
