In Antwerp, drivers of bus route 36 on Linkeroever are not operating on Tuesday, following a fatal stabbing incident on a bus on Monday, according to confirmation from De Lijn.
The transport company De Lijn understands the drivers’ position given the circumstances. There is no clarity yet on services for the coming days. “We hope to have discussions later today and provide updates,” a De Lijn spokesperson stated.
During the stabbing, a 76-year-old man was fatally attacked seemingly without provocation by another passenger. A second passenger, in his sixties, sustained injuries while intervening. The bus driver was taken to hospital in shock. Police quickly arrested a 38-year-old suspect following the incident. The exact details of the case are under investigation, and authorities are seeking video evidence.
The stabbing is not the first violent incident on bus route 36, which has a tarnished reputation due to previous occurrences of vandalism, arson, assaults on drivers, and even a shooting with an air gun. Unions are demanding increased security measures.
