The SDI interprofessional employers’ federation has criticised the increase in parking fees in central Brussels, set to take effect on 1 July, stating it could deal a fatal blow to already struggling local businesses.

The cost for two hours of parking in the red zone will rise from €5.00 to €9.20, while in the green zone, the fee will increase from €3.00 to €5.50.

“It’s not cars you’re penalising; it’s the hairdressers, bakers, bookshop owners, and local restaurateurs, the lifeblood of our neighbourhoods who pay city taxes,” said Daniel Cauwel, President of the SDI.

The organisation laments what it sees as a measure conceived without considering real-world conditions. “It’s a double blow: our members are already battling against online retailers and soaring rents. Now they’re losing their customers too,” Cauwel added.

The SDI is urging the City of Brussels to pause the implementation of the new rates to allow for discussions with local businesses. They are also calling for free parking periods on weekdays and the introduction of short-term preferential rates for customers of neighbourhood shops.
