Smartphones, tablets, and tumble dryers will soon carry a new energy label to inform consumers about their durability and repairability.
Belgium’s Ministry of Economy announced the new measure on Thursday. This new legislation, from the European Union, aims to promote more sustainable consumption.
Starting 20 June, smartphones and tablets will feature the new labels. From 1 July, tumble dryers will also adopt this system, which replaces the previous energy classes (A+, A++, A+++). Products will be graded from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient), primarily based on battery lifespan.
The label will include information on battery life per charge and the number of recharge cycles before capacity diminishes. It will also highlight repairability, impact resistance in the event of a fall, and protection against dust and water.
Additionally, the label will include a QR code linking to a digital sheet in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL), detailing the operating system, accessory compatibility, and the manufacturer’s update policy.
Similar labels have already been introduced for televisions, washing machines, and refrigerators.
