Romelu Lukaku, Belgium’s all-time top scorer, hinted at the possibility of retiring from international football after the 2026 World Cup, although he remains tempted by the prospect of playing in the European Championship.

Lukaku has been a pivotal figure for the Red Devils, who recently underwent a managerial change with Domenico Tedesco’s departure. The team is currently in a “building phase,” according to Lukaku, as they seek to establish a solid squad for the World Cup. He praised new coach Rudi Garcia for his clear vision, organisational structure, and the creative freedom he provides players outside of being possession.

Lukaku downplayed the ongoing debate regarding the team captaincy following Garcia’s decision to rotate the armband among four different captains in his first four matches. “It has never been a problem,” affirmed Lukaku, known affectionately as "Big Rom."

What matters most, Lukaku emphasised, is playing with “the fire to win and determination,” as it elevates the team’s performance. He believes the national team’s greatest victories have been fuelled by “passion and pride,” and recent reactions within the team, particularly after some remarks from the Welsh squad, demonstrate that players now understand this.

“It’s good, but now we must show it on the field,” Lukaku urged, stating that a “locker room of winners” is essential for the World Cup. “As long as we have a fighting spirit, we’re on the right track!”

As for his club future, the former Anderlecht player has not confirmed the rumours that excite Anderlecht fans. While expressing his long-standing affection for the club and desire to return, Lukaku is focused on fulfilling his three-year contract with Napoli before making any decisions.

When the time comes, Lukaku will weigh the pros and cons, considering personal, familial, and professional aspects. “If I feel good, I might want to play at the highest level and remain there,” he said. “Returning to Belgium is good for my family. If I can continue at the top, I will. Everything is possible,” said Lukaku, who seeks “internal peace” at Anderlecht.
