The Parliament of the German-speaking Community has approved a resolution requesting guaranteed representation in the Chamber of Representatives as the Senate is set to be abolished.
The resolution highlights that the German-speaking Community currently has guaranteed representation in the Senate, the European Parliament, and the provincial council of Liège, but lacks such representation in the Chamber of Representatives and the Walloon Parliament.
German-speaking parliamentarians are urging the federal government and parliament to take the necessary constitutional and legal steps to ensure suitable representation for their community in the Chamber.
They argue that it is crucial for the German-speaking Community to assert its demands to both institutions clearly and powerfully. They propose creating a separate electoral district for the German-speaking region, without the need for the alignment of lists, as the best solution.
The parliamentarians also suggest that elected representatives should not be part of any language groups, similar to the current status of the German-speaking senator. According to Article 4 of the constitution, some decisions in the Chamber require a majority in each language group.
Two members from Ecolo and four from the Vivant group abstained from the vote.
