The acting mayor of Antwerp, Koen Kennis of the N-VA, has ordered the closure of five businesses in Van Kerckhovenstraat, located in the 2060 district, for at least one month following several violent incidents purportedly linked to criminal gangs, as a measure to protect public safety.

The city council reports that police interventions revealed armed individuals near the affected businesses. In one instance, police had to prevent an armed conflict. Subsequently, an investigation uncovered that two rival criminal gangs are active in the area.

There is reportedly a significant connection between the gangs and the businesses, which have previously been targeted for violent takeover attempts. These incidents involved shootings, extortion, threats, brawls, illegal weapon possession and vandalism.

According to the city council, the temporary closure is essential to ensure public safety and restore peace in the area. The situation will be reevaluated after a month, with a possible extension if necessary.
