A 17-year-old boy drowned in a Froidchapelle lake after swimming in a prohibited area, the Charleroi prosecutor's office has confirmed.
The boy was swimming in one of the lakes in the Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure complex on Wednesday evening, 26 June, when he got into difficulty.
He was allegedly trying to retrieve a ball in an area of the lake where swimming is prohibited.
The prosecutor's office said the boy's body has been returned to his family. They confirmed his death was accidental.
The Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure estate expressed their condolences to the boy’s family and friends, stating that the exact circumstances are still under investigation.
They assured the public that a comprehensive statement will be released as soon as possible, in coordination with the authorities.
The Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure is a touristic and sports area composed of five lakes between Hainaut and Namur provinces.
