A 71-year-old man was struck by a car on Friday morning in Izegem, West Flanders, and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle tested positive for alcohol and drugs, according to the West Flanders public prosecutor.
The accident occurred around 9 a.m. on the Lodewijk De Raetlaan national road.
The victim was hit while walking on the cycle path.
The 26-year-old driver of the BMW has been interviewed by authorities.
An expert has been appointed by the prosecutor’s office to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
Initial findings suggest the car was travelling too fast to avoid the pedestrian.
