Brussels MP Soulaimane El Mokadem, elected on the Marxist PTB-PVDA list but who left the party, announced he would transition to the PS party, a decision he now regrets, and is now set to resign from his parliamentary position and return his mandate to PTB-PVDA once his sick leave ends.
El Mokadem announced on Friday his intention to join the PS, after having served as an independent since leaving PTB-PVDA in March. He received nearly 15,000 preferential votes in the June 2024 elections, making him the fourth most-voted Brussels representative.
He now views his decision to switch to the PS as a mistake for two reasons. “I am currently not in a position to fulfil a political mandate. It was wrong to think otherwise,” El Mokadem stated. He also emphasised that he was elected based on a programme and that “honouring commitments and a given word are central values to me.”
In conclusion, El Mokadem apologises to everyone he may have disappointed.
