The weekend had most Belgians sweating, but Monday is promising to be even warmer as temperatures will reach up to 32°C across the country, and up to 33-34°C in Brussels. Later this week, the capital is even expected to experience 37°C.
Very warm southern air will reach Belgium at the start of the week, leading to a code yellow warning for heat on Monday and even a code orange warning for Tuesday and Wednesday – with temperatures set to reach 36-37°C.
"The weather will initially be sunny. In the afternoon, a few cumulus clouds will form in some places. The chance is very limited, but there may be isolated (thunder) showers, especially in the south of the country," said the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI).
"The wind will be light, but a moderate sea breeze will develop on the coast in the afternoon," they added. "It will be cooler at the coast, with maximum temperatures around 27-28°C."
Monday evening and night will be dry and slightly cloudy or clear. Minimum temperatures will range between 17°C and 22°C.
Tuesday will be sunny and very warm, with maximum temperatures around 29-30°C on the coast, 30-33°C in the Ardennes and 32-36°C in most of the country (and even warmer in some places).
It will also remain very mild at night, with minimum temperatures around or just above 20°C in most major cities.
Wednesday will also be very warm with maximum temperatures around or above 35°C in much of the country. Locally, 37-38°C is not ruled out. The coastal region will remain cooler at 26°C. It will be fairly sunny again, but the more unstable air will cause a few thunderstorms in the evening and at night.
