The police officer who hit a schoolboy in a fatal police chase in Ganshoren was released on bail under certain conditions, according to his lawyer Sven Mary on Wednesday.
On 2 June, Fabian (11) was reportedly stopped by the police while riding an electric scooter through Parc Elisabeth. He fled, triggering a police chase. The 11-year-old was hit by a police vehicle at around 17:30. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he died later in hospital.
The officer who was driving the vehicle was placed under arrest with an ankle monitor on suspicion of malicious obstruction of traffic resulting in death. His lawyer appealed this decision.
On Wednesday, the Indictment Chamber (KI) decided to release the officer on conditions. "This is a wise decision in a terrible case," said Mary.
The decision means that the officer no longer needs to wear an ankle monitor and can resume work in an administrative position. "He is also not allowed to have any contact with the civil parties, unless initiated by them," the lawyer added.
According to VRT NWS, quoting the lawyer, the officer is willing to speak with Fabian's family.
