The police in the province of Antwerp have already revoked over 3,000 driving licences this year from motorists caught using their phones, the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Friday.
Since 1 January 2025, all police services in Antwerp have been enforcing stricter guidelines. These rules require an immediate 15-day licence suspension for drivers using mobile devices at the wheel.
"This is vital for road safety," stated the Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office. "Research shows that each year, up to 50 deaths and 4,500 injuries in traffic are linked to distractions caused by smartphone usage while driving."
In the first six months, a total of 3,152 licences have been revoked in the province, averaging 17 per day. Alongside the 15-day driving ban, offenders face an immediate fine of €174.
