A man with a gun was shot and injured by police on Saturday morning on Rue des Pierres in the heart of Brussels right next to Grand Place, reports the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
The individual fired at officers around 7:00 in the morning, prompting police to return fire and hit him in the left leg. He was subsequently arrested and detained.
A stray bullet struck a shop window, but no injuries were reported among passers-by or police officers.
The injured man was transported to the hospital. “We dispatched an ambulance around 7:35” said Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. The prosecutor’s office will not provide further comments at this time.
Rue des Pierres was temporarily closed by police to secure the area.
